How to Build a Deck Screen

You can give your home a big, airy porch outside. We'll show you how to frame the patio, attach it to your house, and add all the finishing touches. Even though it will take a lot of time and work for fencing for decks and patios, you'll be able to avoid bugs and spend more time outside during the summer.

  • Plan Displays

Decking screen is held in place by cleats made into the porch's floor and ceiling. Each piece of the screen is 4 feet wide and 8 feet high (or the height of the porch ceiling). This means that each screen panel will cover 4 feet of the porch. So, you need eight panels for a 32-foot patio.

  • Put the Cleat on the Floor

Attach a 2-by-2 that is 4 feet long to the porch floor. If the porch doesn't have railings, push the cleat to the floor's edge. First, drill pilot holes. Then, use the two 1/2-inch screws to put the cleat in place. Join the boards together. You don't have to put the screws into the joists. Move the cleat at least 4 inches away from the railing if there are railings on the porch.

  • Put a Hook on the Ceiling

Add another 4-foot-long two-by-two to the porch's ceiling. Use the level or the plumb line to make a straight line from top to bottom.

  • Cut Screen Frame Boards

Cut one of the one-by-twos to 45 inches with the electric mitre saw. This will make two boards that are 4 feet long.

Use the measuring tape to figure out how far it is from the floor to the ceiling. Cut two more one-by-twos to the correct length using the number you get.

  • Build Screen Frame

Make the frame for each Decking screen with two vertical pieces of one-by-twos and two horizontal pieces that are 45 inches long. Using the screws that come with each frame, put together each frame using the 3-inch metal corner braces. Use the Speed Square to check each one.

  • Add Center Horizontal Piece

Cut another one-by-two that is 45 inches long. Use the four remaining metal corner braces to put this horizontally between the vertical pieces of the screen frame. Choose a level that you like the way it looks. Most of the time, you'll want to keep it between 40 and 48 inches high, measured from the floor up.

  • Add Screen

Have someone help you stretch the screen material over the screen faces and staple it in place. Work slowly, pulling the fabric tighter and tighter as you staple it. Don't fold or crease the paper.

  • Drill Holes in the Frame of the Screen and Cleats

Bolts, washers, and nuts that can be taken off make it easy to put up and take down the screens, depending on the season. Hold a screen panel up by the cleats on the ceiling and floor. Two holes, one in each the screen's frame and the ceiling cleat, should be drilled at the top of the 6-foot step ladder. Put two 3 1/2-inch bolts through the holes, and on the back, add washers and wing nuts. Repeat at the cleat on the floor for fencing for decks and patios.

  • Screen Panels over and over

The shape of the screen panels can be changed to fit your porch. Repeat what you did before until the patio is done.

Conclusion

It can be hard to build a deck screen, especially if you want to use expensive imported wood flooring or composite deck flooring or if you want to add special features. To construct the porch, you may call a general contractor or a decking contractor.
